I'm Going to Die

This semester I took a palliative care class. It was all about nursing for dying people. This was our final:

After Reading The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, develop your own last lecture.  Use one to three pictures to describe the one lesson you would like to leave with your loved ones if you were to die.  Be prepared to describe for whom your last lecture will be as well as what you want them to learn from you.  Don’t forget to recognize any “head fakes” in your presentation.  Your presentation will be stopped at exactly 7 minutes; therefore any amount of time less than that is advised and/or acceptable.  Put some thought into this presentation for your grade will depend on ingenuity, depth and precision and the number of people in the class who learned from your “last lecture”.

I decided to write my last lecture to Lila. I told the class how old she is, and that I wrote the things that I would want her to know since she would have to grow up without knowing her mom. I don't know why I want to share this. I put a lot of work into it, and cried several times-including in front of the class when I presented it. No mom ever wants to think about leaving her kids all alone. There were some things I probably would have added if it were real, and some things I just would never have said in front of my class because they would be too personal. And I had to delete a bunch because it was just to dang long. So here is the brief, public version of my last lecture.

Dear Lila: There are four things I feel are important for me to tell you.
·      First, since you will not remember anything about me, here are some things about me. Hopefully they are things that no one else will think to tell you.
o   I’ve only won one thing in my life. I won a picture contest at work with this picture. I worked hard and took a ton of pictures to win it.
o   I didn’t get my ears pierced until I was almost 16 years old
o   I don’t like condiments. I don’t put ketchup on anything
o   I am afraid to hit anyone because I think they will laugh at me
o   The only time I ever liked eating fish was when I helped catch it on Lake Powell in 6th grade
o   I love to play Nintendo. Not video games, specifically Nintendo.
o   I loved high school chemistry and college stats
o   I love to wear new clothes
o   I panic if I realize I don’t have Chapstick with me
o   I get a thrill from rollercoasters
o   I think long words are cool and I like to try to say them
o   I still hate getting shots
o   I love swinging on the playground
o   Being outside makes me happy
o   I love music and dance
o   I love wearing my red heels

·     ·      The second thing you should know is how to get along with the people in your life. I’ll tell you about the most important ones:

o   Your dad. He is a wonderful man. He and I are almost polar opposites. As you can see from this picture, he is much more serious than I am. Because you will find out for yourself, I won’t tell you how great he is. Instead, I will tell you how to cope with some of his more frustrating attributes.
§  Everyone gets mad. He happens to have a loud temper. He yells and he hits things but he would never hit anyone- just their stuff. Even after screaming about how mad someone made him, he can turn around and be nice to them. Just ignore or leave during his anger fits and all will be well.
§  He is very passionate and opinionated. Know that it is ok to disagree with him. He will make you feel like if you don’t think the way he does that you are crazy or wrong or in some cases a terrible person. In some things you should agree with him and in some things you will not. Listen to what he says and think about it. Make your own decision about whether or not his opinion is right for you.
§  He is very protective. When I was pregnant with you he would get upset if I jumped up and down in excitement because he didn’t want your brain to get scrambled. With me gone he will be even more protective of you. It will be hard and frustrating. Be fair with him even though he won’t always be fair with you. Know that one day you will move out and can do some of the exciting things he didn’t let you.
o   Your Grandma Faber is amazing. You love her so much. Since your dad will probably move you to Philadelphia, I encourage you to keep a strong relationship with her. Sometimes she seems harsh, but she always has pure motives and will support the ones she loves. That means fair discipline if you are in the wrong, but fierce support when you are the one who has been wronged. Be honest with her always and follow her advice.
o   Grandma Itri is also wonderful. She is a lot more relaxed than your Grandma Faber. You should try to emulate that. Raising 6 boys including your down syndrome Unlce Brian and your crazy Papa Nick has helped her see what is important in life. Don’t be too sad if she isn’t able to shower you with gifts and time like your Grandma Faber will. She loves you just as much and is a good example for you.
You have a lot of aunts and uncles. You are lucky because they are all wonderful and amazing people. And they all love you. They will support you. Find the aunts you relate to the most, and let them guide you through your life. Take their advice. Let them know about your life and allow them to be a part of it.

     ·      The third thing is my advice for you in life

o   If you learn and live the gospel of Jesus Christ, you will be happy.
o   Be a good person. Be kind, honest, and non-judgmental.
o   Be calm. In thought, in actions, and in the way you speak.
o   Find out who you are. Don’t let outside influences tell you who you are or who you should be. This was so hard for me to learn. I was depressed a lot growing up because I wasn’t allowing myself to be who I knew I was, I just tried to conform to what I thought was cool.
o   As an example, here is a picture I am very proud of. In high school I was a nerd. I tried way too hard to be popular and it only made me sad. My senior year of high school I finally started to realize that I needed to be who I really was, and not who I thought a cool person should be. Because I became more confident, a really cute, popular boy knocked on my door and asked me to senior ball. Before our pictures I had an idea for our pose. I was afraid to say it because I didn’t want to look lame in front of such a cool guy. I almost chickened out. But in the end I made the suggestion, and he went with it. And look how great the picture turned out. To me this picture represents long-term acceptance of myself and a moment when I was honest, brave, and true to that person. And by the way, I never was very popular.
o   Lastly, as you find yourself, know that you will be most happy with who you become if you are temple worthy. Being yourself doesn’t mean giving in to every worldly desire you have.

·      The last thing I want you to know is how I will remember you.
o   First, you love the temple. Every time we drive by a church you point and shout “temple!” One of your favorite lullabies is the “temple song”. I won’t forget that about you, so please don’t forget it about yourself.
o   Another thing is how cute you are when you jump. You learned to jump quite a while ago, but you still sometimes struggle to get both feet off the ground. It is so cute. You jump when you’re happy or mad. You think it is so fun to run and jump into my arms. You have no fear that I will drop you. I hope you remember me whenever you get a chance to jump.
o   One of my favorite phrases of yours is “Mama, I do it!” When you are excited about one of your accomplishments, you will say this over and over until I acknowledge you. Or you say it when you don’t want my help. I hope you know throughout your life, whenever you say “Mama, I do it!” I will smile and be proud of you.
o   You can count to 11
o   You love dogs
o   You would rather be at Grandma Faber’s house than at home
o   You love to wear new clothes
o   You throw a tantrum when you see Chapstick until it’s in your hands
o   You get a thrill when we throw you in the air
o   You like to repeat long words over and over
o   You still hate getting shots, despite my best efforts
o   You love swinging on the playground
o   Being outside makes you happy
o   You love music and dance
o   You love wearing my red heels
·      More than anything else, know that I love you. I am not afraid of death, but it breaks my heart to leave you. I planned to be a mother my whole life. I have always lived by the advice to cherish every moment with you because you will grow up so fast. Still, more than 2 years after your birth, people give me compliments about how I light up when they ask about you. Everyone knows how in love with you I am. You are always in my heart. And don’t worry, you will see me again. Every night when you go to bed, I hope you will remember what I tell you every time I tuck you in: “I love you. You are so beautiful. Night night.”

Lila Photo Shoot

Lila picked out her clothes today. She picked her favorite shirt. She picked her favorite skirt. And her favorite tights. They are her favorites individually, and when they are all clean at the same time they make for a pretty cute outfit. The shirt is cute but I can't understand why she likes it SO much. So since she had it all together today, I thought we would take some pictures. I tried posing her and we had a good time. Just a few minutes of play. But she's still adorable.

Days

So at our charge nurse meeting in January we all decided it would be beneficial if all the night shift charge nurses worked 2 day shifts and vice-versa. We are having some problems figuring out how we can use our money to pay for employees on the floor. Recently we changed night shift staffing to have 4:1 patient to nurse ratios instead of 3:1. If you can to math that is more than a 30% increase in our patient load for the nurses. In exchange we got a secretary for the shift and another tech the second half of the shift. Anyway we are trying to decide if this is better than the old model (which by the way, I don't believe it is) and thought that it would be helpful for everyone to walk in the shoes of the other shift.

So the last two days I was a little day-shift lady again! I can't believe how fun it was. mostly because I had freaking amazing patients, but still. It was nice to not have to fight the sleepy bug. It was nice to have the doctors come around so I knew what was going on. It was nice that I wasn't trying to make my patient's sleep better, resulting in boredom for me. I got to do a lot more teaching, helping, and coordinating. And I had a lot of people that seemed happy to see me because it's been over a year since I've worked days! That part was nice. Always nice to be noticed.

It was also nice to take part in some treat getting. Day shift gets a lot more treats than night shift does. On Thursday I ate a delicious peanut butter bar, and today I got a Krispy Kreme donut (which, by the way, I LOVE). I felt a bit guilty taking part, knowing that night shift gets the shaft.

However, when I got home at 7:30 to find out that I had ruined Todd's plans for the evening by being so late, he just said "this is why you don't work days." And I felt bad. Even if it weren't for the extra money I get from the night time differential, I do get to go to church every week and only one evening is ruined at a time instead of two. (I have to go to bed early the night before and get home late the night of.)

So the moral of the story is that even thought I like being at work a lot more during the day, my home life is more important and it's better for me to work nights. However, this was a fun refresher. Maybe I'll try to pick up another day shift every now and then.

She Sings

Lila and I have a little tradition when I put her to bed. We sit in the rocking chair in her room and I sing her songs. Most of them are primary songs. I ask her what she wants me to sing, and she will say "Temple song" or "Jesus song" or she'll pick the frog or duck song. Actually most of the time she will just say "help." That just means she wants me to pick the song for her. Last night she picked the temple song for her last song (I think that is her favorite one). I asked her to sing it for me before I sang it for her. And she did. The cutest thing ever. I wish I could portray her musicality in writing but of course it will never do her justice. But it went like this- "temple song, I go inside."

One day Lila, I hope you do.

Advance Directives

Does everyone know what they are? I have some plans in the back of my mind to have an end of life care planning party the next time my whole family is together. I really think it is a topic of conversation that everyone needs to discuss with their loved ones. Everyone!

So, just in case you don't know, I will tell you what advance directives are. They are sometimes called "living wills." So, you all know what a will is, right? You get to decide what happens to your stuff after you die. Well a living will dictates what happens to your body when you are unable to do the dictating for yourself. For example, in your old age you get pneumonia and are on a ventilator to keep you breathing and you are unconscious. Or tomorrow you get in a car accident and are comatose. Things like that. Things we don't want to think about because they are scary and no one wants them to happen. But they do!

Generally people are either considered "Full code" or "DNR". If you are full code status we will do everything possible to keep you alive, and everything possible to bring you back if you die. If you are DNR, we will (or at least should) do everything possible to keep you alive, and let you go if you die. I have the opinion that everyone should fill out the paperwork in their state to specify which they would prefer- even if you would want everything done. However, it is even more important to have a discussion with your family.

Everyone has a different idea of the value of quality vs. quantity of life. Some people really want to be kept alive no matter how much pain they're in, how dependent they are, and how clear their cognitive abilities. Others would rather pass than stay in a mortal state that is less than optimal. If your family ever gets put in the position when they have to make these kinds of decisions for you, it will be so much better if they know what you want. People feel guilty over letting loved ones go, and they also feel guilty over watching them suffer. If they know what you would want, it makes it so much easier. Plus you get what you want. And no one has to fight over it. Families get torn apart over this stuff!

Sorry if that was morbid. It is just something I really believe in.

Mote to a Beam

So I just chastised my best friend Puddle for not posting enough on her blog. I admit several months ago I was so sad that hardly anyone was posting, that I decided to boycott my own blog for a while (to teach them all a lesson, of course). It was just getting really sad when I wanted to see what was new with all my friends and family and there was nothing to see! And the more I posted the more I checked other peoples' blogs and the sadder I got. So the last few months I have been trying to get back into it, but I still have not been very good.

So here are a few things that have been going on. I have officially started working part-time, which is really nice. Unfortunately, it came at a time that it didn't actually give me any extra time. With my new calling in church and school really picking up, I think it is possible that I see Lila even less now than when I was just working full-time. I miss her! Lucky I am on day 3 of my 7 days off so I have already tried to remedy that by spending a lot of time with her and doing a lot of playing.

Another big exciting thing is that my best friend showed up on my doorstep this afternoon! (This is how I was able to tell her to blog more. Thus the Mote/beam title for this post). She had an adorable little cake with her that she made for my birthday. Having her here made me realize how much I miss her. She is such a good friend, I love her so much! Pretty much ever since we have been friends I have been frustrated with how little time I have gotten to spend with her. In high school she was a rockstar gymnast that practiced every day and had meets on lots of weekends. In college we went to different schools. Then we had real jobs. Now she's moved to Arizona. All of this makes me sad to think about.

But she has always been there for me. I have always wanted a surprise birthday party. But really the surprises she has done for me probably would top any party anyone could throw for me. She surprised me by visiting me when I lived in Philadelphia. That was amazingly fun. What a good friend to spend the money to fly out, then deal with my work schedule and anything else that was going on where I couldn't give her my undivided attention. Then she threw me a surprise baby shower when I was pregnant with Lila. She invited a lot of friends that I was really happy to see, and made the cutest diaper cake I have ever seen. Then she showed up on my doorstep today. All the way from Arizona just for my birthday! (Not really, of course, but I can pretend).

The funny thing is, I really had no clue about any of these surprises. And if you ask Todd, I am usually pretty good about picking up on things. He also tried to surprise me while I was in Philadelphia, but I knew he was coming. I had another surprise baby shower from the singles ward Todd was in the bishopric for, and I figured that one out too. But Puddle, she always knows how to get me!

Just because she deserves it, you all can now hear some of the sappy things that I think make her wonderful. She is so smart. And nice. And caring. Just a sweet person to be around. She is nonjudgemental and helps me be the same way too. She knows who she is and has blessed my life by just being the amazing person she is. Her husband is so lucky, and she is the best mom to her kids. Her darling little girl is so sweet and graceful, just like her.

I wish I had more pictures of her on my computer, but here are a few. In fact, if you have an amazing memory you will notice you have seen 2 of them before.

Happy Birthday Lila!

Today is Lila's birthday. My beautiful angel baby isn't really a baby anymore. She is such a big girl! Here are a few things about her.

Loves to watch Sesame Street. Has peed in the potty a few times. Loves chocolate. Huge vocabulary. Has the cutest run. LOVES going to "house" (grandma Faber's house). Goes to daycare 5 hours a week, despite daddy's depression over this. Can count to three. Knows that P is a letter. Starting to recognize her colors. Loves animals. Loves being scared. Enunciates well. Loves mommy. Hates it when mommy goes to work. This morning saw daddy and said "bye bye daddy work!" Loves having dance parties in the basement. Loves bikes. Knows the difference between cars and trucks. Likes to help get the mail. Loves her uncle Darren but won't talk to Danica (sorry about that). Favorite foods are bananas, chicken nuggets, pasta (regular or cheesy pasta), yogurt, and pizza. Gets excited about going to nursery but has started to get nervous and want mommy to stay with her when she actually gets there. Doesn't really like wearing pants. Loves her daddy. Associates dresses with church. Doesn't really like being home and often yells "no!" when we pull in the driveway. Likes being tickled. Has decided she absolutely HATES baths and screams the whole time. Often will randomly say "bye bye" as a question or exclamation to try and trick us into taking her out somewhere. Makes her parents a little more proud of her every day!

For her birthday we had a party with my family last night. Anna made an amazing cake for her and we ate pasta for dinner which she loved. She absolutely loved opening her presents. It was ten times better than Christmas less than 2 months ago. Still crazy to me how fast she grows up. Thanks to everyone for coming, she had an amazing birthday party! (Prepare for picture overload)

Lila and her presents

Darren and Danica were nice enough to bring her a present. She immediately picked out a marshmallow before moving on to her other presents.

All by herself

She sure has a great cousin, so willing to help her try out her new presents! :)

This was the face she would make when she finally realized what something was under the wrapping paper

When she came upstairs and saw the pile of presents she pointed and said "bike!" I guess I'm not that good of a wrapper. She guessed it.

The AMAZING cake I told you about

It says "Happy birthday to you. You live in a Zoo......

If you look closely you can see the smoke from the candle. I told her to blow it out and before I could even push it towards her she had already accomplished her task.

Beautiful birthday girl!

Even the inside of the cake was reminiscent of a zoo animal. Can you guess which one?

I forgot to take a picture of Lila eating her cake until she was done.  Then I couldn't get her to smile because I wouldn't let her take her bib off.

Some Cute Lila Stuff

Lila's latest favorite thing is playing monsters. She loves when we roar at her and run after her and tickle her. The other day we made a fort downstairs, turned off all the lights (except one down the hall so it wouldn't be pitch black) and took turns popping out and scaring her. She kept saying "I'm scared!" but then would laugh hysterically and ask for more.

In fact, as I was uploading these photos Lila happened to look over and say "Monsters!"

I was sick for a few days so it had been over a week since I went to work. Lila saw me putting on my scrubs and took it upon herself to put them on too. So I put her stethoscope around her neck so she could be a nurse like mommy and daddy.

And while I was sitting here working on my computer, I looked over to find that Lila had picked up the Friend, brought it over and sat by me to read it. When I looked over and noticed how studious she was being, she pointed to a picture of some missionaries and said "bike!" Later she saw a picture of an angry kid, but was really concerned about him because she thought he was scared. She kept pointing and saying "scared" in a really concerned way like she wanted to help him.

Part Time!

As of this week I am officially only working part time. I am so happy about this. Because I have a hard time working three days in a row and Todd starts to go bizonkers if I do, I have to work a few on, a few off, one on, one off, back and forth. I typically only have 1-3 days off at a time. It might seem like a lot to have 3 days off, but it is usually only 1 or 2, and those days are tainted by work still because my sleep schedule gets messed up and I spend one of the days sleeping.  Because I now only have to work 2 days a week, I can do them together then have 3-7 days off. Yup, that's right! every 3 weeks I will get a whole week off.

I am so done with working. Just done! I love being home with Lila. I love taking care of my home, and I have a lot more responsibility at church now. And I just want Todd to go to work like a normal husband. Lucky for me, this should happen soon! Even a few more months is doable now that I am only part-time. Everyone please pray for Todd to be able to find a job, then shoot us the info if you find out about an RN opening anywhere!

Looking back at the last few years, I think there is a lot of good that has come out of me working so much. I used to think I was the kind of person who would always want to have some sort of job. But I am just so "over it" at this point. I think that maybe it will be a blessing in future years for me to know and remember how I am feeling now. Maybe I won't be sad and whiny about wanting to work a little on the side of everything else. Maybe I can just stay happy to be home. Or, maybe I will need to or want to work just a little, and this job experience will be what lets me get the job that fits best for me and my family. Or maybe some of the friends I've made will become good, life-long friends. Or maybe I will just appreciate more what Todd will be doing when he is working. When he comes home tired, when he works several days in a row, the endless meetings and trainings and required certifications.

I also feel like I have grown and matured exponentially through my job. I am more calm and deliberate. I have better time-management skills. I am better at looking at things from others' point of view. I am better at stopping and getting all the facts before I allow myself to get really emotional (not always, after all I am still a girl). I think overall I just get mad a lot less. Anyway, although I'm mentally done working, I am grateful that I have had this experience.

Oh, and I guess I will be ok if I have to work into April, because then I will get a chance to wear my sweet scrub dress to work. Yup. Scrub dress. Stay tuned for more on that.

Sorry, Todd

I took Lila to the mall to play yesterday. This cute little boy attached himself to her and followed her around everywhere. And she seemed to like it. Poor Todd, you thought you wouldn't have to deal with that for a long time.

Working for Christmas

So this year for Christmas I am at work! My extended family all got together at my Grandma and Grandpa Faber's house for Christmas Eve dinner. Todd and Lila and I all went up early to visit before I would have to leave, and I headed to work just as everyone else was arriving. That part was sad. It was also a little awkward that I got to start eating before Anna's family and Lauren and Shelly who also came early to play with me (thanks guys!) But I didn't care because I was eating delicious sticky fingers from Wingers! And delicious company potatoes (AKA funeral potatoes) and Lion House Rolls. MMMMMMMMMM. Thanks Grandma. Soo good.

So I was on my way to work, sad that I was missing all the fun and a little worried about the snow I was driving in, when the traffic got really slow at the point of the mountain. This didn't worry me too much, there is always congestion there. But then I noticed a lot of cars moving into the right lanes and figured there was actually an accident. When I got up to the site, I saw several cars pulled to the side, and I think about three that looked like they were affected by the crash. But there were about 7 guys pushing one car off the side of the road with a frightened looking girl at the wheel. The front tire was smashed and completely flat, along with the front of the car. It made me feel good to see so many people that had stopped in the middle of their Christmas Eve plans to help out until the clean-up-crew could arrive. Snow was falling so much my rearview mirror was starting to be obstructed by the collected slush. Nice guys pushing cars in the snow= warm fuzzies. I wish I had a camera at that moment to catch all those nice boys helping out.

Tonight as a special Christmas bonus for my patients I have tried really hard to offer oral care. I have helped three of my four brush their teeth. Some of you are probably thinking "duh" and some thinking "gross" at the thought that I might not offer it, but it is something that usually gets overlooked around here. There are life-saving treatments going on, we don't care about brushing your teeth!! (I do actually care, but your blood pressure tanking just takes precedence!) Also, it really falls under the techs job to do such things, so sometimes when I am busy I just chalk it up to being their responsibility. But deep down I know that EVERYTHING is the nurses responsibility. So tonight I made a special effort to make sure everyone's teeth got brushed. And I still have one left but that patient is in dialysis and going home when he's done so he will probably brush his teeth at home. And this turned into a much longer explanation than I anticipated. So Merry Christmas patients! I at least feel very lucky that even though I have to work instead of stay home with my family, I get to be here helping people.

Our New Tradition

Yay! We started a new holiday tradition in our home. We need more of those. Only a few days after Thanksgiving we picked up our tree. Our new tradition is to eat made-from-scratch cookies and made-from-scratch hot cocoa while we decorate. Thanks to Todd who used the scratch to make our delicious treats!

P.S. Don't you love Lila's smile? Any time she sees something that looks like a camera she sticks her face in it and gives a big "CHEESE!!!!"
