Nick Turns Free!

Nick was excited for his birthday for more than a month before it happened. He even understood the concept that he was two, and on his birthday he would turn three. (If you couldn't tell, he didn't earn free entry into anything, but pronounces his new age "free").

Here are some things about him:

kind and sweet. is sad when others are sad. loves his sisters. hoards. steals. puts everything he can find into a bag. seems fixated on taking things and grouping them to make them his. eats a lot more than most three year olds. this includes sardines on crackers with cream cheese. good at riding his scooter. won't use pedals on a bike. favorite show is The Lion Guard. he loves screen time. sings along to most anything. has pretty good rhythm. is sleep deprived constantly because he refuses to go to bed at a normal time, then wakes up at 7:00 or earlier. recently kicked his binky habit (against his will). shares a room with Lila. likes to sleep in just his underwear. his pronunciation of that word sounds like "wonder wear." pronounces again "oh-gen". adds "just so you know" to the end of many of his proclamations. his best friend is Linley Yarn. knows all his colors, but no letters and counts 2-1-3.

For his birthday, we invited Linley's family to a bounce house with us. We had a lot of fun!

Then we ate Chick-fil-A for lunch!

Then we came home and made Nick's birthday cake. He picked chocolate!

Then we ate one of his favorites, red pasta for dinner. After that, we had grandma and grandpa and Nikenzie over for presents and cake and ice cream! Also, remember how I mentioned that Nick loves to steal things and stash them in strange places? Well, his candle in the shape of a large #3 went missing. I looked everywhere for it. So he ended up with NO candles on his cake! It was horrible!!! (Except Grandma was glad that there was no spit on her cake since he didn't blow all over it.) I found it a few days later in the freezer.

Happy Birth Day Jane!

We are so excited to have our little Janey baby home with us. Obviously, I don't really blog anymore. But I still need to keep a record of my adorable children. So here is a readers digest version of how things went.

I was induced, although I really didn't want to be. I had to choose a new doctor for this baby since the one who delivered Lila and Nick retired last year. One of the main reasons I picked the doctor I picked was because I wanted the same doctor to see me at each of my visits and then deliver my baby. Here in the Valley of Utah the dominant OBGYN just has you see random people and a random person delivers you. I had to do some digging to get around that.

Anyway, I found out at 38 weeks pregnant that my doc was going out of town the day after my due date. So I could either be induced before he left, or have some stranger deliver my baby. Or I could wait until 8 days after my due date if I didn't go into labor on my own, which I didn't want to do for safety reasons for my baby.

So I was due on my 10 year anniversary. Which caused us to push up the induction date even one day sooner. Then I made a bad choice to get an epidural, which was definitely the wrong choice. It truly only affected one side, and baby girl came much quicker than we expected. Since I could feel half of what was going on, and the duration was so short, I regret that decision. I ended up spending money and enduring a big needle for basically no reason. (I made the choice because I didn't think I could last another 6-8 hours without it. But since it was only about another hour, it totally would have been doable. Plus the fact that I could feel half of it anyway. Might as well go all the way, right!?)

Jane struggled at first to breath. Since we have had 2 kids before and we are both nurses, Todd and I could both tell right away that something wasn't right. In the 25 minutes following her birth, we heard a lot of scary words like "intubation," "crash cart," and "transfer to Provo." Somehow, we lucked out and she only had to be moved to the small NICU on site for CPAP that lasted about an hour. After that she did much better and we are so grateful that we didn't have to do anything more drastic. It is a horrible feeling to have your baby taken away before you have even seen her face.

The next few days went well, and then we all came home. Lila was delighted to have baby around and was a big help and very good. Nick was delighted to have baby around, but was mad at mommy and started acting out. I am grateful that he didn't act out toward Jane, but it was still sad when he wouldn't even let me hold him when he was crying about something to comfort him. He is doing better now, but unfortunately did learn that he doesn't actually have to do everything we ask him to, so I don't think he will ever go back to being quite as sweet and obedient as before.
